Myth 101 – Thresholds

Thresholds, a place of liminality, a moment of endings and beginnings. Thresholds are a consequence of the unfolding of time as any movement will lead one to places of crossing. Orpheus looking back, Amaterasu emerging from her cave.

Silence is also a threshold experience and a liminal place/space. Thank you for posting this. My Pacifica dissertation in the Clinical program is on the liminal experience of silence in depth psychotherapy. Could you kindly provide references beyond the ones listed regarding other threshold experiences in mythology? Thanks and best wishes!

Hi Michael ~ one of the other mythological threshold myths that comes to mind is Inanna and her crossing over the 7 gateways into the underworld, each crossing requiring a sacrifice.
Campbell looks at the liminal threshold moment in the heroes journey, you may want to take a look at the beginning of “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”.
