2025-2026 Downing Fellowship

The Christine Downing Dissertation Fellowship (CDDF) carried the name of Professor Downing in acknowledgement of her contribution to the fields of depth psychology and mythology, her many years of teaching at Pacifica Graduate Institute, and her gift to OPUS of her own archival materials. The purpose of the Downing Fellowship was to award an annual scholarship to dissertation students in the fields of depth psychology and mythology studying at any accredited graduate-level institution. Once awarded, the Downing Fellowship recipient used the collections at OPUS for a significant amount of her or his dissertation research.

Jodi Casperite

Jodi’s dissertation,”Compassion Fatigue, the Caregiver Archetype, and Shadow Integration in Nursing Practice” examines compassion fatigue in nursing through a depth-psychological lens, with particular attention to the inner life of the nurse. She examines archetypal images found within myths and stories to explore how they might illuminate the experience of caregiving and guide nurses toward a more balanced relationship with their inner and outer worlds. Rather than understanding compassion fatigue solely through stress, burnout, or emotional regulation, this work explores how identification with the Caregiver archetype and the unconscious or shadow dimensions of caregiving may contribute to emotional depletion, disconnection, and loss of meaning. The archival works of Carl Jung provide a foundation for examining archetypes, the Shadow, the Self, and the relationship between conscious and unconscious life. Marion Woodman’s writings are particularly relevant to her exploration of embodiment, feminine consciousness, and the consequences of neglecting the inner life. The works of James Hillman and Christine Downing further support her inquiry into archetypal psychology, myth, imagination, and symbolic experience. Through these archival materials, she explores how attention to the nurse’s inner world, together with engagement with mythic and archetypal images, may open pathways toward greater self-awareness, meaning, vitality, and a more integrated way of caring.

Jaclyn Kalkhurst

“Jaclyn Ke-Yin Kalkhurst is part of the Mythological Studies program at Pacifica Graduate Institute. Her dissertation, “The Primordial Void: A Comparative Mythological and Depth Psychological Study of Creation Myths in Zoroastrianism, Bön and Mongolian Traditions” examines the archetypal images of void, darkness, wind, water, and other primordial states that appear at the threshold of creation. Through comparative mythology and depth psychology, she explores how these different cosmologies give form to the mystery of what exists before creation begins.

Over the course of a year and a half, Jaclyn traveled to OPUS Archives and Research Center to listen to approximately forty hours of Joseph Campbell recordings on mythology, archetypes, and cosmogony. Although she never had the opportunity to meet Campbell, listening to fifteen archival recordings allowed her to experience his work in a uniquely personal way, almost as though she were learning from him directly. Through these recordings, she gained a deeper understanding of Campbell’s approach to studying mythology and archetypal patterns through the stories cultures tell, as well as his explorations of the cosmogonic cycle and the movement from the unmanifest into form. These ideas have become an important part of the comparative and archetypal approach she brings to her dissertation. For Jaclyn, working within the archives became its own kind of initiation, made especially meaningful by the opportunity to conduct her research alongside Joseph Campbell’s original desk.”

Heather Taylor

Heather was part of the Mythological Studies program at Pacifica Graduate Institute. She received $5,000 to support research for her dissertation titled Re-storying a Sense of Identity with a Mythological Herd. Inspired by the discovery of the myth of Ocyrhoe in the pages of Ovid’s Metamorphosis, Heather examined the “archetypal images of horses in myths to re-examine how they can guide us into a more balanced relationship with the earth, each other, and ourselves.” She engaged the works of Marion Woodman, James Hillman, Marija Gimbutas, and Christine Downing to help inform her “approach to the mythical herd” as she developed her dissertation in the OPUS Archives.
