Archival Assistant & Volunteer Opportunities

OPUS Archives and Research Center offers opportunities for archival assistants (a volunteer position) and volunteers to be involved in many areas. Archival Assistants and volunteers differ in that archival assistants are trained and work directly with the collections whereas volunteers work on specific projects that require less training and their work is overseen by Archival Assistants. Anyone can apply to volunteer in either of these capacities, including the general public and students currently enrolled in coursework or writing their thesis/dissertation.

Archival Assistant and volunteer duties may include, but are not limited to: administrative support, research service, digitizing/preservation, cataloguing of collection materials, retrieving and re-shelving collection materials and collection maintenance. Volunteers greatly contribute to OPUS' accomplishments and are considered a valuable asset and part of the work being brought into the world.

Archival Assistant and volunteer assignments incorporate the current needs and ongoing projects of OPUS as well as the expertise and interests of the archival assistant/volunteer.  The volunteer application may be downloaded here and mailed to our office.

Archival Assistant Program

An Archival Assistant is trained one on one, specific to the collection they are interested in and the ongoing projects in that collection. Once trained, archival assistants focus on the collection of their choosing and work closely with the OPUS staff to preserve the archival material and make it accessible to interested scholars. The archival assistant program seeks to foster a deep and rich experience centered around interacting with the work of the scholars in the collection.

For more information on becoming either a volunteer or an archival assistant please contact Dori Koehler at (805) 969-5750 or email at dk@opusarchives.org
