Jung, Myth and The Soul's Journey
The C.G. Jung Foundation presents

a daylong workshop led by
G. Kwame Scruggs, PhD

Saturday, February 26, 2011
10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

We can keep from a child all knowledge of earlier myths, but we cannot take from him the need for mythology. — C.G. Jung, Symbols of Transformation

Give people a fact or an idea and you enlighten their minds; tell them a story and you touch their souls. — Hasidic proverb

In this workshop, we will discuss from a Jungian perspective how the use of myth can engage people in shaping their own lives as they "dialogue" with their vocātiō, or their calling. We will come to imagine how — by incorporating the common themes of myth and the character traits of the hero — we can become the hero or heroine of our own stories, analyzing a myth while the myth analyzes us.

G. Kwame Scruggs, founder and executive director of Alchemy, Inc., holds an MA and PhD from Pacifica Graduate Institute, Santa Barbara, California, where he studied depth psychology and the use of mythology in human development.

He also has more than fifteen years of experience working with urban youth. His doctoral dissertation, "There's a Secret in the Village: Using Myth to Engage Urban Adolescent Males," was recently published in book form by a major international publisher. He is a Certified Facilitator of the Akan System of Life Cycle Development (African-based rites of passage), and completed his first level of post-certification in Ghana, West Africa.

Saturday, February 26, 2011, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
To be held at the C.G. Jung Foundation
28 East 39th Street, New York City

Workshop Fee: Foundation Members/Students: $55; General Public: $70

Tickets should be purchased in advance by mail, by phone or fax with credit card, or in person Monday – Thursday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

"Antartica: Inner Journeys in the Outer World" by Robert Romanyshyn, Ph.D.
Thursday February 17th, 2011

6:30 - 8:30 p.m. , Suggested Donation $10

OPUS at Pacifica Graduate Institute

801 Ladera Lane, Santa Barbara, CA 93108

RSVP to info@opusarchives.org or by phone at 805-969-5750

"The DVD ‘Antarctica: Inner Journeys in the Outer World’ is a documentary of a trip I took with my wife to that region of the world in November 2009. The 86 images set to music and accompanied by a voice over set a tone of reverie that invites one into a landscape of beauty that awakens the ancient bonds between us and the living soul of the world. The frozen forms of ice that dwarf our human presence are crystal cathedrals, which echo the ancient music of nature. Responsive to these harmonies one begins to realize how out of synch with nature we are, and one begins, perhaps, another journey, an interior one from exile toward homecoming.

This documentary points to the necessity of a psychological response, a response of the human heart that beats in harmony with the rhythms of the heart of nature. Drawing upon Jung’s rehabilitation of the feeling function as a legitimate way of engaging the world, the DVD is an appeal to keep heart in mind.

The DVD is an example of such a feeling response. Its final image is the one I photographed as we were leaving after the last landing on the ice. Before I saw the blue heart at the core of the melting ice, I heard a barely audible sound. That sound turned me around. It was and is the appeal not to forget our place in the natural

world."

All proceeds from this event will go towards supporting the collections at OPUS Archives and Research Center.

Celebrate the incandescence of humanity’s interdependence with Earth at the Gaia Festival

Gaia - she is the ancient Greek name for Earth, our mother, and with her comes a deep, archetypal appreciation for Earth as an animated creature;a world soul or Anima Mundi, if you will. The explosion of eco-consciousness in the last forty years represents a synthesis between science and mythology. It represents a return to reverence for Earth, and humanity’s place in movement of Earth’s soul. Gaia Festival is just such a bodily experience of soul.

This festival begins with an opening circle featuring the hauntingly primal sounds of the flute and includes a beach ritual intended to send healing energies back to Gaia’s oceans and help establish reconnection between the human souls engaging in the ritual. Further presentations include explorations of creative movement, healing and archetypal meditations on human impact on Gaia’s natural cycles.

OPUS Archives and Research Center is pleased to announce Gaia Festival presentations from the following voices familiar to our community:

Stephen Gerringer

“FROM HADES TO HEAVEN: A Labyrinthine Legend of Love & Loss”

Stephen is a member of the leadership team that steers the Joseph

Campbell Foundation (JCF). As a vital colleague at the JCF, he is

instrumental in the continued development of community organization and

the development of the community’s shared vision.

Catherine Svehla

“Birthing, Breathing, Thinking, Weaving: Gaia and Grandmother Spider”

Catherine is a writer, scholar, and storyteller with a Ph.D. in

mythological studies from Pacifica Graduate Institute. Catherine is also

a recipient of the first New Mythos grant cycle that OPUS awarded

in 2010. Her writing and workshops explore the relationships between

mythology, consciousness, and culture, and the potential for a

more beautiful, just, and sustainable way of life.
